The problem

 

For decades, residents of Chilpancingo, Morua and other neighborhoods located near Otay Industrial Park have paid with their health the maquiladora industry development. Residents have seen for years how the Arroyo Alamar (Cottonwood Creek) is polluted by chemical and toxic waste produced ad discharged by maquiladoras to the river.

For years, the residents of these neighborhoods together with environmental collectives have demanded a rehabilitation of the Arroyo Alamar and the preservation of her forested area. Tijuana needs lots of green zones, clean public recreational spaces for families, and natural systems that mitigate the industrial pollution.

But the government of Tijuana has other plans. A highway is built. It will link a new Tijuana/San Diego international gate and new industrial parks in Tijuana. Hundreds of families have been removed and the Arroyo Alamar is been destroyed. We demand that communities are taken into consideration regarding decisions that will affect our quality of life. Yes to development, but sustainable.

Agua bendita y el arroyo Alamar

El Arroyo Alamar es una de las dos fuentes de abastecimiento de aguas subterráneas con las que cuenta la ciudad de Tijuana, formando parte del complejo del Río Tijuana-Alamar de donde se obtiene una producción importante de agua para riego y consumo humano.

 El Alamar es uno de los principales arroyos de la ciudad de Tijuana, cuenta con un área de cuenca de 1, 103 km2 (96.7%), tiene su nacimiento en territorio de EUA en la elevación 1,380 msnm, iniciando su recorrido con dirección SE con el nombre de arroyo Miller, después de recorrer 40 km recibe el nombre de arroyo Campo hasta su cruce con la ciudad de Tecate, y del otro lado de la frontera se llama Cotton Word.

 A partir del cruce con la ciudad de Tecate toma el nombre de de dicha localidad, posteriormente toma la dirección Este, recorriendo 39.3 km y entrando a la ciudad de Tijuana, cerca de la caseta de cobro Tijuana-Tecate, en donde recibe el nombre de Arroyo Alamar. Recorre aproximadamente 10 km. dentro de la ciudad, al final de los cuales se une al río Tijuana en el sistema de canalización de concreto denominado Río Tijuana, cuya desembocadura final es el océano Pacífico del lado de los Estados Unidos, en la zona que conforma el estuario del río Tijuana. En total el arroyo recorre 79.3 km. con una pendiente media de 1.7%
